The West Mercia Friends of the Organ (WMFO) is affiliated to the Incorporated Association of Organists (the IAO) – an umbrella institution that supports the work of local associations and holds regional and national events.

The Royal College of Organists

The Royal College of Organists’ (the RCO) is the premiere institution in the UK offering learning and qualifications in organ playing and related studies. It organises many courses around the country and operates its own Academy. Several members of the WMFO hold RCO qualifications, and a number of us study with its teachers and attend its courses.

A number of our events are organised in cooperation with the Cathedral Music Department.     We are honoured to have all the Cathedral organists as members of the Friends, and our President, Samuel Hudson, is the organist and director of music.

Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Organ Department

The Organ Department of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire offers graduate and post-graduate courses in organ and related studies. It also offers periodic courses and recitals open to interested members of the public. Several members of WOA have studied with the Department and we regularly support its courses and recitals.

Diocese of Hereford Organists’ Training Scheme

The aim of DHOTS is ‘Enhancing and improving the skills of church organists in Herefordshire and South Shropshire’.  We in the WMFO enjoy the same friendly and productive relationship with DHOTS.

British Institute of Organ Studies (BIOS)

Several of the Friends have been involved with the Institute since its formation in 1976 and support its work, especially on managing the National Pipe Organ Register (NPOR) and the Historic Organs at Risk Register (HORR).
